Summer Road Trip Part Two: Santa Fe

I think this trip was inspirited by Batman, I mean Jack, I mean Christian, many years ago.  I dedicate this post to him.

I kind of feel like summer isn't summer without a good road trip.  Last year we went north so this year we headed south.  Mesa Verde was our first stop on our way to our ultimate destination, Santa Fe, New Mexico.  I'm not sure why I've wanted to go there, but I did and I knew that nagging feeling wouldn't go away until I saw it.  Luckily I have a husband who also likes to see new places and kids who are great travelers.

We found a great condo that was perfect for kids and very close to the city center.  Beckett was thrilled to be able to swim as much as his little heart desired.  Summer in Utah was a little late this year so this was our first real taste of the sun for the season.

We brought our fifth family member with us, Bob.  He helped us a lot on our walking tour of the city.

New Mexico Museum of Art
Palace of the Governors
The oldest house in the U.S.
Loretta chapel with the miraculous staircase

Saint Francis Cathedral

This Labyrinth was in the courtyard of the Cathedral.  It's meant to signify life with it's twists and turns, feelings of being lost, and joy upon reaching your destination.  The boys just thought it was fun.

New Mexico State Capitol
Okay a word about capitol buildings.  While visiting the inside of the NEW MEXICO state capitol, a state that I had been in less that 24 hours, I realized that I had never been inside the Utah state capitol.  There are probably many who live in Utah and have never been inside, but I felt especially ashamed since I live about a mile away from it and have seen it pretty much every day for the last 6 years.  Oh and there is the fact that my typical running route literally takes me to the capitols front steps.  Despite all this, it was actually my 3 year old son begging me to go in that actually got me inside.  It's really neat.  I plan to go back soon.  Soon is a relative term.

This is one of the many contemporary art galleries found on Canyon Road
Hidden on the back wall of an out of the way courtyard we found a plaque signifying a once secret portal for those working on the Manhattan project.

Museum Hill where we went to the Museum of International Folk Art

In the historic plaza where we came across an antique car show, and a traditional mexican dance performance.  The boys were memorized by the dancers.

On our way out of New Mexico we stopped in Chama for ice cream.
And so we bid New Mexico farewell for now.  We enjoyed her immensely.  To Santa Fe I say, please swear you won't forget me.
